My Book Review: The Thorn of Lion City A Memoir of Lucy Lum

After reading the previous story book ' Yakuza Moon' borrowed from a Cindy, I developed an interest of reading Fiction books which records real life story of the author as it is more convincing than those fantacies of non-fiction novels.
The book ' The Thorn of Lion City by Lucy Lum' caught my eyes when I was browsing for a story book at a local popular bookstore.

I can't stop flipping the book after reading each chapter. I will read the book whenever I was free at home or travelling in bus.

Summary:

This evocative memoir of a little girl's upbringing in an immigrant Chinese family in Singapore in the 1940s illuminates life during the Japanese occupation and the powerful relationship between a father and daughterLucy Lum was the third of seven children, born in Singapore in 1933 into a Chinese immigrant family ruled with an iron hand by Popo, her fearsome and superstitious grandmother. Popo is a firm believer in the old ways, in stomach-churning herbalist remedies, in the dubious fortune-telling of mystics, and in mischievous little girls like Lucy knowing their place. She is forever dispensing her own wicked brand of justice, much to the despair of her adopted family.

This is Singapore in the 1940s, a former British colony now living under the specter of the invading Japanese—the hungry worms crawling down from the north, as Lucy knows them—and fear floods the streets. Lucy's father, a kind-hearted and talented linguist, finds himself being used by the occupiers as a translator, and brings back terrifying stories of his merciless employers, which he confides to his daughter under the heavy teak table they use as a make-shift air raid shelter in the bedroom.

With a fresh and powerful voice, The Thorn of Lion City breaks the long silence of the Singaporean Chinese. Heartbreaking and ultimately triumphant, it speaks of the softly-spoken, redemptive love between a father and daughter. Lucy Lum grew up in Singapore and moved to England in 1970. She lives in London.
The only thing is, Lucy did not mention how she escape the 'evil crawls' of her mother and Popo. How she strived and moved to London when she grew up. Her story would be completed if these were included in her book.
The story resembles the current popular Mediacorp drama series ' The Little Nyonya'

Christmas Lunch 2008 @ Eve's house

Every year, we celebrated Chritmas either having a dinner or at the Club. This year, we had a little different way celebrating our Christmas.

Eve and her husband are the first one having their own nest among us and it's more easier to 'mess' up with her kitchen freely.. Hehee..

We were invited to Eve's house for Christmas Lunch. Cindy me & Eve decided to make the dishes by ourselves. Three of us were not professionals in cooking and we followed receipes and by observations. We were still busy cooking in the kitchen when our first guest, Xueni arrived. Thanks for her help up. We were very excited to serve our food out to our guests as this was our first attempt being a cook for a day.

The first three dishes were prepared by me. To be safe, I better prepare something that doesn't need much time and stove to cook.

Fresh Garden Salad

Tuna Sandwich
Honey Baked Ham & Egg MayoSandwich

My All Time Favourite Task ~ Tuna Sandwich. This time, I added a new flavour of sandwich. Honey Baked Ham & Egg Mayo Sandwich. This idea came from Cindy. She brought over some Honey Baked Ham and suggested to make egg mayo sandwich. This is my first attempt and it turned out successful! I don't eat hard boiled egg and I like the taste too.

Clam Chowder Mushroom Cream Soup

Good feedback on the Clam Chowder Cream soup. Thanks to the convenient canned soup, with a little bit of ingredients, it turned out to be tasty.

Swiss Rosti by Evelyn

This Swiss Rosti was very tastey, it originally should be eaten with Sour cream but it seems to be quite difficult to find Sour Cream here, so we use Tatar Sauce for substitude.

Oyster Sauce Chicken Wings by Evelyn & Cindy

These chicken wings were marinated the previous night so that the gragrance of the oyster sauce could be absorbed by the chicken. I love these Chicken wings.

Bacon Kebab by Cindy with Xueni's help

Apart from our prawn kebab, we add another dish, bacon kebab as there's leftovers celeries. This was our first attempt. We never tried it before and we want to try if bacon can works well with celeries and it works perfectly!

Prawn Kebab by Cindy with Xueni's help

Many loves this prawn kebab but some doesn't like capsicans. I find the capisicans and mushrooms tate plain. Maybe next time we can grill them with a litle bit of salt.

Cindy fried the rest of the left over ingredients with black pepper sauce. Yum Yum!

Cranberry Hello Kitty Jelly by Cindy

Cindy prepared another yummy dessert, Durian Puff, but was so popular that it were all finished before I could take a picture of it. After eating, there's a few feedbacks. some like it warm and some like it chilled. I like it chilled.

This half log Christmas Log cake was given by Eve's neighbour.
It was great to have a feast that were made by ourselves. It's tired though but it's tastier and more meaningful to eat the food prepared by ourselves.

We would like to thank Xueni who came to the rescue for help up when we were behind time preparing the food.

Christmas Deco 2008

I have taken some photos of this year's Christmas Decorations and Christmas Trees -Bugis, Suntec City & Orchard Road.

Let's start with the central area.

CHRISTMAS TREE @ SUNTEC CITY

This gigantic Christmas Tree is located at the entrance of Suntec City, where you can see it once you exit from City Link. The tree is shltered. It's a waste for the big tree to situated at the semi indoor area. It should be out at outdoor near the Wealth of Fountain.

DAY & NIGHT CHRISTMAS TREE @ PARCO BUGIS JUNCTION

I find this Christmas Tree at Bugis Junction very creative for its wizard hat shape. At the first look, it may look wired and funny, but after a few looks, I feel like I'm Alice in the Wonderland, surrounded by all kinds of Fairy Tales characters. I don't know about others but at least it touched my heart.

DREAMY CRYSTAL CHRISTMAS TREE BY LEE HWA JEWELLERY

Jewellery is always ladies' best friends, so do mine. But too bad, Can See No Touch!

I took a walk along Orchard Road to take pictures of the nice Christmas Decorations. Of course, you have to go down yourself to take a look at the brighly lightened decorations.

CUP CAKES CHRISTMAS @ NGEE ANN CITY

Wow, So sweet!! I feel like giving them a bite!

CHRISTMAS TREE AT WHEELOCK PLACE

ANGELS OF SHAW CENTRE

ARTISTIC DECO AT SCOTTS HOUSE

COTTAGE CHRISTMAS @ TANGS

ANGELIC CHRISTMAS TREE @ PARAGON

The street is lighten once the day turns down brighten up the whole Orchard Road

THE CHARITY CHRISTMAS TREE @ SUNTEC CITY CONVENTION HALL

THE MOST QUESTIONABLE DECORATIONS

The most questionable figurins along Orchard Road outside Ngee Ann City. No meanings and write-ups. The poster behind seems to be an advertsement to these figurines.

These looks like the figurines put up for Christmas at NAC last year.

Well, the Christmas Decorations did not give me surprises. Maybe when people grown older, seen more great things, we'll tend to have mo re expectation. We'll loose the excitements from the decorations like we used to see when we were young then.

I also have my own Christmas Decorations.

HO HO HO HO!

MERRY CHRISTMAS!!!
